Sojo Mojo is a recording project featuring American vocalist Gabriella Kreuz and a rotation of female vocalists - some regulars, some in guest turns. It is the brainchild of Scarface actor and musician Steven Bauer, songwriter/producer Jim Petersen, and multi-instrumentalist/producer John Drake.
As Bauer explains, “groups often go stale with their sound, and it’s often the vocals that are the culprit. Lots of singers use the same vocal attack time and time again, to the point where the listener knows where the whole thing’s going.
So we had the thought of mixing it up - coming at you in different ways. The main idea we had was to utilize a variety of voices with Petersen’s songs - which are quite diverse and varied themselves. Gabriella is dynamic, but another song may require a heavier sound, or more rhythmic - so we go with a female voice - and the listener is taken by surprise, perhaps.”
Bauer asserts there will be plenty of surprises. “There should be plenty of mystery and intrigue to this project because, in addition to our regular line-up, a component of Sojo Mojo is going to be the guest vocalists - celebrity or non - some credited, and frankly, some not.
There are no binding restrictions with us - everyone comes and goes as they please. It’s a musical open marriage, in that sense! Live shows should be especially interesting. We could plant some of our singers in the audience - you could be sitting next to one of them without knowing it.
The main thing is that Jim and John and I know what the music of Sojo Mojo is about - and the unifying sound that’s in our head - that’s still there, no matter who’s singing the song.”
Following the release of the debut single “Something To Smile About”, and it’s “B side” follow-up “Just Don’t Ever Tell Me” (on the boutique label Bash-Boom Records, with major label distribution on the international side) plans are underway for both a Sojo Mojo American and World tour.
